Get What You Need With Custom Roman Shades

Custom Roman shades are made according to specific instructions that you provide to the manufacturer. Most online retailers and stores have ready made Roman shades in standard sizes, but if you have windows that are larger or smaller than usual you will need to have your shades custom made. This means that you will have to pay extra and if you decide they are not what you want you won't be able to return them for a refund. Therefore when you are measuring the windows for the shades you have to be absolutely sure that you have the correct measurements. You also have to be sure that the color and pattern of the fabric you choose is what you want.

Your first decision for ordering custom Roman shades is to choose the design you want. There are five designs that you can use, which are:
  • Flat
This design looks like one continuous piece of fabric when the shade is lowered.

  • Pleated
This is the traditional Roman shade design where the fabric is pleated horizontally in various measurements. You can have pleats evenly spaced or at varying points in the shades.

  • 6-inch Pleats
This provides a very casual look to any window.

  • Swag Bottoms
Having the shades gathered together at the bottom gives the appearance of drapes to the window.

  • alloons
The shades can have shirred balloons providing a very relaxed design.
Once you have decided on the design and color that you want, you then have to provide the measurements. This will depend on whether you want the shades mounted on the inside or the outside of the window frame. If you are measuring for an inside mount, measure the width and height in three different places inside the frame. If you don't want the cord visible to the outside it is better to go with a rear dust cover as well. When you want to install the shades on the outside of the frame, measure the distance for the width, making sure that you have even amounts on both sides. The length of the shade can vary here because most people using this type of mount allow the shade to come down longer than the length of the window. Round all the measurements to the nearest 1/4 inch because the factory does deduct this amount from your measurements.

If you want the pleats to match in your custom Roman shades, when ordering more than one shade for a room or for French doors, you will have to specify that with your order. If you need hold down brackets, you also have to order them with the shades. Otherwise, the shades will have wood dowels and attachments screws for the bottom edge. You can choose to have a valance if you wish, as well as black out linings if you want the shades to completely darken a room when you lower them.

Once you do order custom Roman shades and decide to change your order, most retailers will charge 50% because of the extra costs incurred, especially if they have started on the shades and then have to begin again.
