Learn How to Measure Roman Shades

If you are wondering how to measure for Roman shades you will be pleased to know that the process is actually quite simple. There are a number of things that you must keep in mind. It is very important to measure each window, in which you intend to place a Roman shade, individually as the size from window to window tends to vary (sometimes by a lot!).

To measure for Roman shades, use a steel measuring tape, as opposed to a cloth one, as a steel tape measure is much more accurate and much less frustrating to use, especially on larger windows and particularly if you are doing the measuring without the aid of another person. While it makes no significant difference, most people prefer to measure the width first followed by the height, which is sometimes referred to as the length. Also most individuals prefer to measure from the left to the right, though, once again, it makes no substantial difference. Recording of the measurements should be done to the nearest 1/8 of an inch. Knowing how to measure Roman shades precisely and properly can greatly reduce the chances of you being dissatisfied with the product you receive.

When it comes to how to measure Roman shades there are two different, but very similar processes, one of which is for an inside mounted shade and the other is for an outside mounted shade. It is vital to be extremely accurate when measuring for an inside mounting as the slightest inaccuracy can cause the Roman shade not to fit inside the window casing properly and ultimately look rather awkward. There is often a minimum requirement for the depth of the window also and it is generally in the range of two to three-and-a-half inches. The measuring of the width inside the window casing should be done at the top, middle and bottom to account for any variance in the window casing and take a note of the narrowest measurement within. The same then applies to measuring the height but be sure to record the longest measurement in this case. Taking deductions for clearance is unnecessary, as the factory will prepare your shades so they fit as comfortably and conveniently as possible.

The process of how to measure Roman shades for an outside mounted window treatment is a little less complicated as it requires less precision. To guarantee the most in terms or light control and privacy is it important that you measure for a considerable overlap of the window casing. This overlap should be in the range of one to one-and-a-half inches on both sides of the window opening. This measurement should be the exact width you wish to be covered. The height should also be measured in this manner with the overlap accounted for. The desired overlap generally covers from the top edge of the molding to either of the top edge or the bottom edge of the windowsill. If you wish to mount above the molding, you should include an additional one to one-and-a-half inches to allow for the mounting bracket. It is also important to note that the factory will make no deductions for an outside mounted shade, so the desired appearance will be based entirely on your measurements.
